We went on a road trip from Bangkok to Phuket in our Suzuki Celerio in April 2023 during the Songkran Holiday. It was a great journey. We are a little family of 3, my wife, I and our 2-year-old son. According to our Google Map Timeline, it took exactly 11 hours and 38 minutes. We traveled 853 km (530 miles) on a single day. We have left our Bangkok home at 1 AM and arrived in Phuket around 4 PM.
We have traveled through these provinces on our way to Phuket.
- Bangkok
- Samut Sakhon
- Samut Songkhram
- Ratchaburi
- Phetchaburi
- Prachuap Khiri Khan
- Chumphon
- Surat Thani
- Krabi
- Phang-nga
- Phuket
First we left our condo in BangNa area of Bangkok around 1am. I drove around a bit to find a 7/11 to grab a ice coffee for a long drive. First stop 7/11 at 1:41 AM.
After that, we went onto toll-way at Sanphwut Soi 2 then, we drove about 1 hour and 58 minutes – 155 km (97 miles) until we reached a PTT Station near the border of Phetchaburi Province. We filled up the tank and stopped there for a short while to stretch our legs. My son was still sleeping. I don’t remember if I pickup another coffee or not.
I started driving again after that, this time about another 212 km (132 miles) for 2 hours and 18 minutes, then we stopped for rest again at another PTT Station in Prachuap Khirikhan Province. By that time, we already passed Hua Hin and Cha-am as we took the bypass route.
After that, we drove about 46 mins – 75 km (47 miles) until we reached another PTT Station to rest and buy another ice coffee at 7/11. By that time, we have already reached Tha Sae District in Chumphon Province.
After leaving the PTT Station in Tha Sae District in Chumphon Province, we drove another 52 minutes – 69.4 km (43 miles) and stopped to rest at Thung Tako District and we were still in Chumphon Province.
And then, we drove another 131 km (81 miles) 1 hr and 42 minutes until we reached Surat Thani Province. The time was 10:30 am, it was getting hot outside in April heat. The month of April is usually the hottest month of the year in Thailand. So, we decided to take a break for a few hours to cool off our car and have some food for lunch.
We stayed at the Lephant Hotel in Surat Thani (by the way, it was a nice hotel and fair price) for about 3 hours and had our lunch and booked a hotel in Phuket. We didn’t book our hotel before leaving Bangkok. 🙂
Then we drove another 207 km (129 miles) until we arrived at our hotel Novotel Phuket Resort. The time was 4:42 PM.
It was such a great feeling to finally see the Andaman Sea after travelling very far. On the way we made many stops almost every hour or a couple of hours or so because my wife, my toddler son and I needed to rest and had a snack and rest room break. Also my car needed to cool down and to refill gas and water. And we didn’t make a hotel booking ahead since we were not sure we could make it to Phuket in one day but we did it. I can guranteed that Suzuki Celerio is a very strong car.
The road to Phutet from Bangkok is quite fine. It was easy to drive. I suggest you leave early. It was more easier and faster to drive at night than day for me because I love the calm and the feeling of night. But I suggest that you should have enough sleep before that and be very careful on the highway at night because it is also very dangerous at night. Always make your car in good condition by sending it to service regularly. For me, I went to bed around 6pm the night before and woke up at 12 am (midnight) and left our home at 1 am. When you drive long distance, don’t tire yourself. Take a rest whenever needed and don’t rush. Thailand speed limit on the highway is 120km/hr.
